Greg Kuehn - Nothing Left But LoveThe formula is simple -- take a sweet melody and saturate it with tons of delay/reverb -- but it works. This is how every score to every film should play out, illuminating the raw, gritty, melancholic nature of its characters. Everyone should check out this documentary (here's the trailer). When it comes to a score setting the tone, though, nothing beats Special, the best movie I saw all of last year. If you can manage to find it, you'll be won over within the first 20 seconds if you share the same aesthetic as I do. (I think I might start a film blog, hmm...)
